A Word From The Founder
Here’s our story…
Moved on a daily basis...
I am continually moved by Patrick’s innocence, purity, and absolute joy he displays in certain things, traits shared by many autistic adults and children.
However, despite these beautiful characteristics, caring for Patrick has often been very challenging. Due to certain behavioural issues that come and go, with one set being replaced by another, it demands relentless focus and dedication, making it difficult to accomplish anything else during those times. Unfortunately, resources that provided practical help whether paid for or available through agencies were very scarce and still are. Family and friends who were willing to help soon realised that it was very different from looking after a neurotypical child. This meant that apart from school, which was a tremendous blessing in many ways for half of the year, the rest of the time we were faced with almost incessant and challenging behaviour.
After speaking with many other families and carers of autistic children and adults, I discovered they faced similar challenges. There were very few options for any regular quality break that provided what I now see as a crucial service to both the carer and the autistic child or adult. Speaking with these families and carers, I saw a lot of angst, fear, exhaustion, and desperation, leading in some cases to dangerous mental health situations—something needed to be done to help this situation.
Calm breeds calm, options create growth...
What I noticed was that when I was well-rested and clear-minded, I saw a remarkable improvement in my interactions with Patrick. My patience was greater, and I could connect with him on a more meaningful level with ease. This, in turn, positively impacted his behaviour and our overall experience, creating a beneficial cycle that sustained itself. This realisation, combined with the sometimes desperation I felt in my own life and the lives of many others, inspired me to establish AutAid. I wondered how the world of autism would change for the carers of these incredible individuals if they had access to a facility that provided regular breaks, allowing them to rest and be the best version of themselves for their autistic charges. A service that enabled carers to re-enter the workforce, pursue training or quite simply experience a life that didn’t stretch them to the point of mental and physical exhaustion. A service that offers parents and caregivers of autistic children and adults essential yet straightforward options that significantly improve their lives and allow them similar options to parents and carers of neurotypical children.
Our ethos is simple but powerful. AutAid is a service designed to support the parents and carers of children and adults with autism by providing respite services whilst simultaneously providing a space where individuals with autism can flourish. Its goal is to create a positive ripple effect that enriches the lives of everyone involved. One county at a time, we are making this vision a reality across the island of Ireland. With the collective support of everyone involved—our current and future fundraising participants, corporate sponsors, government funding, incredible volunteers, and highly trained staff—we are set to make this vision become a beautiful reality.
Thanks for visiting AutAid. We always need help, so please explore the site to see how you can assist. Whether it’s a donation, organising a fundraising event, or volunteering your services, any assistance, no matter how small, is very welcome.
Best wishes,
Patrick.
